Origins
- The Peel
Family Mediation Pilot Project at the Ontario Court (Provincial Division) [now the Ontario Court of Justice]
began in June 1998. It was the result of the efforts of local judges,
lawyers and mediators (including mediators with the Peel Halton Dufferin Mediation Association).
Its aim was to provide mediation services for families in the Peel,
Halton and Dufferin regions. It was operated entirely on a volunteer
basis, without formal funding.
- The Pilot Project became the Peel
Family Mediation & Parent Education Program. Its services
were restricted to the Regional Municipality
of Peel but expanded to provide not only mediation to people
involved in family law proceedings, but also related education services
. The Program has been in operation since April 1999. It received a
five year grant from Ontario Trillium Foundation in 2001.
The Five Components
The Program had five components:
- mediation services
- family law information sessions (the "FLIS")
- parent education workshops
- mediation internships
- research & outreach
Restructuring
The Program was restructured in early 2007, with Peel Family Mediation Services continuing to provide the four of the components - Family Services of Peel undertook to operate the Parenting Education Workshop.
